I Saw a Moose Today, by Minnesota author Anne Stewart, illustrated by Brent Spink, and originally published by Raven Productions in 2007 is back in print. The new edition is distributed by Itasca Books.

As a long-time Ely Minnesota resident, Anne is quite familiar with the local critters featured in I Saw a Moose Today. Despite their large size, moose are an especially elusive creature and spotting one takes patience and a bit of luck.

To spot a moose near Ely, MN, focus your search at dawn or dusk along Highway 1 and the Echo Trail (County Road 116). You can also try hiking through moose habitat at Bear Head Lake State Park, located about 15 miles southwest of town. Ely is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) which may offer your best chance to see a moose. Quiet canoeing into swampy bays and portaging on backcountry lakes allows you to view moose feeding on aquatic vegetation without disturbing them.

Less elusive is locating the book I Saw a Moose Today. Anne had about a billion copies of I Saw a Moose Today printed, and while sales are steady, she needs your help to clear the warehouse and her garage and her kitchen and the garages of all of her children.

In a recent interview, Anne commented, "At first I thought it was a good idea to print the second edition but now I see moose everywhere I go." So let's help Anne reduce the stockpile. This really is a fun children's book. There are spunky animals, a child to identify with, the rhythm and rhyme of poems, and pictures in which there is something new to discover with each reading.

Sprinkled in the story are a few fun big words, like "cacophonous" and "hibernate", with a glossary in the back for advanced readers or parents and teachers. An information page on each animal gives facts even adults may not know, and raises questions that will create a "let's find out" attitude in readers of all ages.
